Scholar Stories – Eileen’s College Journey
Through education, advocacy, and collaboration, Latino U College Access is increasing college enrollment and completion among Latino youth in our community. We provide students with the skills they need not only to become first generation college students but first generation professionals and leaders!
One of our newest first gen professionals is Eileen, a Latino U Scholar from the Class of 2015 and a 2019 Manhattan College graduate. Here’s how LUCA helped make her college dreams come true:
“Starting the college admissions process was a wake-up call. I had the support of two very loving Mexican parents, who encouraged me to go to college, but that was all they knew. My parents didn’t know about the SAT or campus tours, and they couldn’t help me write a college essay. As I observed my peers, it seemed like everyone else already had a plan, and I realized that I was alone.
Then, I enrolled in the Latino U Scholars program, and it was the best decision I ever made. Being the first in my family to go to college was overwhelming at times. I had a lot of questions – not just about the application process but throughout my four years.
LUCA was always there for me. They helped me build my college list, secure financial aid, create a LinkedIn profile, and even identify internship opportunities! I wouldn’t be where I am today without the help and guidance of LUCA and my College Coach. I hope you will support them because of all they do to help first gen students, like me, achieve their college and career dreams.”
