The Keith Haring Foundation Awards $70,000 to Latino U College Access
Empowering First-Generation Students on Their College Journeys

White Plains, NY – Latino U College Access (LUCA) is grateful to announce that its partnership with The Keith Haring Foundation, originally launched in 2019, has been renewed through 2021 with a very generous grant in the amount of $70,000 to support the organization’s signature Latino U Scholars program. This funding comes at a critical time for Latino students. While the COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted the lives of millions, it is especially and disproportionately affecting the Black and Latino communities. For first-generation and low-income students, the toll has been significant. They are torn between supporting their families through this crisis and pursuing their academic goals; many are doubting if their college dreams can become a reality.

Gil Vazquez, Acting Director, explained “The Keith Haring Foundation is committed to sustaining, expanding, and protecting the legacy of Keith Haring, his art, and his ideals. We value the power of education. This partnership with Latino U College Access aligns with Haring’s wishes to enrich the lives of underserved children as we work together increasing educational equity for Latino students.”

The pandemic threatens to erase the last ten years of progress made in educational equity and access for Black and Latino youth; institutions across the country have seen a drop in enrollment, and fewer financial aid applications have been submitted than in prior years. However, students in the Latino U Scholars program continue defying these odds. 100% of Scholars in the Class of 2020 enrolled in four-year universities with an average out-of-pocket cost of $5,000 per year. Furthermore, 100% of Scholars in the Class of 2021 submitted their college applications and critical financial aid forms and already started receiving acceptances.

Shirley Acevedo Buontempo, LUCA’s Founder and CEO, shared, “We deeply appreciate the Keith Haring Foundation's continued generous support. Their investment in our mission has a tremendous impact on the students and families we serve, especially through these uncertain times. This grant will be instrumental to ensure we continue guiding first-generation, low-income students on their pathways to college completion.”

Latino U College Access is grateful for the Keith Haring Foundation’s ongoing support to ensure that Latino students have a clear pathway forward to achieve their goals and fulfill their remarkable potential.
